Why transferable points unlock the best flight redemptions
Transferable points programs let you move points into multiple airline partners. That flexibility is what makes high-value business class redemptions possible — you're not locked into one airline's award chart. If you're new to this, start with our rewards strategy framework to pick the right card.
A single round-trip business class ticket booked with points can be worth four to eight cents per point, compared to one cent per point for cash back. That spread is also why a premium annual fee card can pay for itself if you fly more than once or twice a year.
Step 1: Decide where you actually want to go
Award availability drives everything. Pick two or three realistic destinations and a flexible date range before you start searching.
Off-peak dates, tuesday/wednesday departures, and shoulder-season travel dramatically expand what's bookable with points.
Step 2: Search award space before transferring
Never transfer points to an airline until you have found the exact award seat and confirmed it's still bookable. Transfers are one-way and cannot be reversed.
Use tools like the airline's own award search, plus an aggregator, to find the seat first. Then transfer the exact number of points needed.
Step 3: Book directly with the operating partner
Whichever airline you transfer to becomes the airline you book through — even if the flight is operated by a partner. Pay attention to taxes and fuel surcharges, which vary widely by program.
Some programs charge a few dollars in taxes. Others can charge hundreds in fuel surcharges that wipe out most of the value.
